Whole Genome Sequencing

What is whole genome sequencing?

Whole genome sequencing is a method to determine the near entirety of an individual’s DNA sequence. This means all known DNA associations for diseases and physical traits can be tested . When new research studies find new DNA associations, it is then possible to go back and analyse the data. This may be of interest for building family trees for ongoing pedigree programs and tracing DNA lineages for specific DNA variants.

Unlike other technologies, whole genome sequencing is very data rich and may be used to find novel DNA associations through genome wide associations studies. The limitation is that it is more expensive than traditional ‘DNA tests’ and the turnaround time is generally longer. Whole genome sequencing is best suited to individuals that need 100s of DNA variant tests for one animal and would like to incorporate other data analyses such as family trees and inheritance probabilities.
